Defending Champs knock off Hi-Liners on the Road
LANGDON, N.D. – Valley City headed to Langdon Friday night to take on top ranked and defending state champion Langdon Area-Munich. The Cardinals scored on every possession in the first half to take a 40-0 lead on the way to a 48-0 win over the Hi-Liners.
Valley City got the ball first and had two nice completions to get out to their own 44-yard line. But a fumble ended the drive when Hudson Kriewald lost the handle on the ball when he was trying to hand it off to Hunter Undem. The Cardinal’s Landon Schneider recovered the fumble at the Hi-Liner 37-yard line.
Langdon Area-Munich used the short field to get on the board. A seven-play, 37-yard drive was capped off by Evan Ottem’s 14-yard touchdown run. The extra point was wide right, making the score 6-0 Cardinals with 8:00 to go in the first half.
The Hi-Lines went three-and-out and punted the ball away. Tye Cordie’s 24-yard punt gave Langdon Area-Munich the ball at the Hi-Liner 42-yard line. Another seven play drive for the Cardinals covered 42 yards and resulted on Eastyn Schaefer’s six-yard touchdown run. Connor Mitchell added the extra point to make it 13-0 Cardinals with 4:38 to go in the first quarter.
The Hi-Liners had a good drive on their next possession. It started with Chase Coghlan’s 27-yard kickoff return to the Cardinals 48. On fourth down and eight, Hudson Kriewald scrambled for 17 yards and a first down to the Cardinals 31-year line. A pass interference penalty gave Valley City a first down at the Langdon Area-Munich 16-yard line. On third and twelve, Kriewald hooked up with Cordie, who made a nice sideline catch, for an eight-yard completion to the ten. But an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball back over to Langdon Area-Munich.
On the ensuing drive, the Cardinals would go 90 yards on seven plays and take just under two-minutes off the clock to add to their lead. On the first play of the second quarter, Schaefer completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Henderson. Mitchell’s extra point was no, making the score 19-0 Langdon Area-Munich with 11:53 to go in the first half.
Following Cordie’s 39-yard punt, Langdon Area-Munich went 69 yards on eight plays. Schaefer scored his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. Mitchell’s extra point made it 26-0 Cardinals with 6:43 to go in the second quarter.
Valley City went three-and-out on its next possession. Cordie booted a 49-yard punt that gave the Cardinals the ball at their own 27-yard line. Langdon Area-Munich would go 73 yards on twelve plays, culminating with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Schaefer to Colton Hein. Mitchell’s extra point made it 33-0 with 1:36 to go in the first half.
Another three-and-out for the Hi-Liners would force a punt by Cordie. His 30-yard punt gave the Cardinals the ball at their own 44-yard line. Five plays later, Schaefer scored his third touchdown of the half. His four-yard run capped the 56-yard drive. Mitchell’s extra point made it 40-0 Langdon Area-Munich with eleven seconds to go in the first half. That was the score at halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals took the second half kickoff and marched 67 yards on 14 plays. Gavin Trottier capped the drive with an eleven-yard touchdown run. The drive took nearly the entire third quarter. Gavin Gemmill scored the two-point conversion to make the score 48-0 with 38 seconds left in the third quarter.
The first play of the second half for the Hi-Liners was a bad snap that got by Kriewald. Caleb McDonald recovered the fumble for Langdon Area-Munich who took over at the Valley City 16-yard line.
Langdon area was on verge of scoring again, but Trottier fumbled just as he was about to cross the goal line. Tye Cordie recovered in the end zone for Valley City.
The Hi-Liners then went on a nice twelve play drive and moved 53 yards down field to the Cardinals 37, but the game clock ran out on Valley City to end the game.
Valley City will be on the road again this week when they head to Milnor to take on Sargent County. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
