The young Valley City Hi-Liners continue to show exactly what they’ve been building toward all spring — resilience, grit, and the ability to answer adversity with composure. On Saturday in opening-round Region Tournament action, the Hi-Liners erased a late deficit to defeat the Enderlin Eagles 7-5 and advance to a massive showdown Monday night against the Kindred/Richland Vikings at 6 p.m.
For a Valley City team with only one senior on the roster, this season has been less about perfection and more about growth. Early in the spring, the Hi-Liners showed flashes of offensive explosiveness but also endured some difficult stretches against strong competition. Instead of folding, they kept evolving. Over the last month, this group has steadily become tougher at the plate, more aggressive on the bases, and more confident in pressure moments.
Saturday’s win may have been the best example yet.
After trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hi-Liners delivered a four-run rally that completely changed the game. Haylee Lueck opened the inning with a single before Riley Smith ripped an RBI single to center to cut the deficit to one. Valley City then forced pressure with aggressive baserunning and contact at the plate, eventually tying the game before clutch situational softball from Adalie Jewett and Addy Gerhardt helped push the Hi-Liners ahead for good.
The comeback reflected the identity this team has developed throughout the season. Valley City has now scored double-digit runs in eight games this spring and repeatedly shown the ability to create offense in bunches. Even in losses, the Hi-Liners have proven they can compete offensively with quality teams across multiple classifications.
Delaney Everhart battled through adversity in the circle and came up with key strikeouts throughout the game, including closing the door in the seventh inning to secure the postseason victory. Valley City finished with timely hitting across the lineup, while players like Lauren Larsen, Bethani Schuldheisz, Ellie Altringer, Riley Smith, and Haylee Lueck all contributed important moments offensively.
Now comes the next challenge.
The Hi-Liners will face a talented Kindred squad Monday evening, a team that handed Valley City a 6-1 loss back on April 28. But this Valley City group is not the same team it was a month ago. Since that matchup, the Hi-Liners have continued to mature, gaining confidence through wins over teams like Lisbon, Enderlin, Minot, and Hankinson while sharpening their aggressive offensive approach.
At 11-7 overall, Valley City enters Monday playing some of its best softball of the season at exactly the right time.
And with a young roster learning how to win meaningful postseason games together, the ceiling for this group still feels like it’s climbing. ⚾🔥
