Queens of the Court: Nielson Sisters Make History as Hi-Liner Girls Tennis Cap Historic 2026 Season
Nielson sisters win State Doubles Title
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Championships are difficult to win. Repeating as champions is even harder.
But for Valley City's Kailee and Skye Nielson, the challenge only seemed to bring out their best.
The Hi-Liner sisters capped one of the most dominant seasons in program history by capturing the NDHSAA State Doubles Championship for the second consecutive season this past weekend in Grand Forks, leading a Valley City contingent that once again proved it belongs among North Dakota's elite tennis programs. Along with the doubles title, senior Georgia Zaun earned a sixth-place state finish in singles for the second straight year, while the young doubles team of Lexi Svenningsen and Kinlee Sufficool gained valuable state tournament experience against some of the best competition in the state.
For Head Coach (and Dad) Matt Nielson, the weekend was a fitting conclusion to a season defined by excellence, resilience, an unwavering commitment to team culture and Fatherly pride.
Back-to-Back State Champions
Kailee and Skye Nielson entered the state tournament undefeated as a doubles team and carrying the expectations that come with being defending state champions.
For much of the tournament, they looked every bit the part.
The duo cruised through the opening two rounds, dropping just two total games while advancing to the semifinals. It wasn't until a showdown with Century's Ava Dunlop and Sophia Edland that the Hi-Liners truly faced adversity.
"We were not moving, on our heels, and not confident in the first set," Coach Nielson said. "We weren't getting our feet into position or attacking the ball."
Valley City found itself trailing 1-5 in the opening set before battling back to 4-5. Although the comeback fell short, the set loss sparked something in the defending champions.
"That set loss awoken the beast," Nielson said. "In the next two sets, they were moving like lightning, picking off balls at the net and always attacking their strokes from the baseline and being the aggressors."
The sisters stormed back to claim the semifinal victory and advance to the championship match against Minot's Ava Thuner and Grace Olson, the top doubles team from the western half of the state.
Valley City had defeated the Minot duo earlier in the season, and that confidence carried over to the biggest match of the year.
Kailee and Skye dominated the opening set 6-0 before Minot adjusted its strategy and briefly grabbed momentum in the second set. The Hi-Liners responded like champions, winning five of the final six games to secure the state title with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
The championship made history.
With the victory, Kailee and Skye became back-to-back doubles state champions, marking the first time in Hi-Liner tennis history that a player has won multiple individual state championships.
For Kailee, the title completed a flawless senior campaign. She finished the season 38-0, becoming the only Hi-Liner to ever complete an undefeated season while also setting the program record with 172 career victories.
Meanwhile, sophomore Skye finished 37-1 and continues to build a resume that already ranks among the best in school history.
Zaun Battles Through One of State's Best Matches
While the Nielson sisters brought home championship hardware, senior Georgia Zaun once again demonstrated why she has been one of the state's premier singles players throughout her career.
After an impressive opening-round victory, Zaun found herself in a quarterfinal showdown against Dickinson's Shayna Klitzke. What followed was one of the most memorable matches of the entire tournament.
The opening set went to a tiebreak before Klitzke narrowly escaped with the advantage. Refusing to back down, Zaun responded by playing some of the best tennis of her career.
"It was probably the single greatest set of singles that I have had the privilege of coaching," Nielson said. "They were hitting hard, placed, consistent balls. They were running every shot down and putting it back deep. They were making great shot selections on tough balls."
Zaun battled back to force a deciding third set before eventually falling in a match that drew spectators from around the facility.
"People that didn't have any skin in the game would stop and watch this match as it was that wonderful," Nielson said.
Rather than allowing the heartbreaking defeat to derail her tournament, Zaun responded exactly the way a veteran leader would.
She dominated Fargo Davies' Sadie Barnett in the consolation bracket before defeating familiar rival Mary Wolf of Shanley to advance to the fifth-place match.
Although she ultimately fell to Bismarck Century's Jenny Pitcher, Zaun secured sixth place in the state for the second consecutive season.
Her final season was remarkable by any measure. Zaun finished 32-8 overall, with every singles loss coming against players who ultimately finished among the top five in the state tournament. She also became just the third player in program history to surpass 150 career wins.
Future Remains Bright
One of the weekend's most encouraging performances came from freshman Lexi Svenningsen and senior Kinlee Sufficool.
Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed from the East, the duo immediately drew one of the state's top teams in Century's Ava Dunlop and Sophia Edland.
Despite dropping the first set, the Hi-Liners refused to fold.
They rallied to win the second set and then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the deciding third set before the experienced Century team mounted a comeback.
"That was an amazing match for Lexi and Kinlee," Nielson said. "Of course we wish we could have won it, but you did incredible."
Although the result didn't go Valley City's way, the performance showcased the potential of a young player like Svenningsen and highlighted the tremendous growth made by Sufficool, who was competing in her first season of high school tennis.
A Season for the Record Books
The state tournament served as the final chapter of a season that shattered expectations and rewrote portions of the Hi-Liner record book.
Valley City finished with 203 individual match victories, breaking the previous school record by 25 wins. The team also tied the school record with 17 dual victories, matching last year's state championship squad.
Yet for Coach Nielson, the significance of the season extends far beyond wins, trophies, and records.
"The real value is not in the wins and hardware," Nielson said. "The value is in lessons learned along the way. How to grow in defeat. How to control the things you can control and block everything else out. How to perform in stressful situations."
Valley City graduates four important seniors in Kailee Nielson, Georgia Zaun, Rylyn Thompson, and Kinlee Sufficool. Replacing their leadership and production won't be easy.
Still, the future remains promising.
Six state tournament participants return next season, including Skye Nielson, Lexi Svenningsen, Sara Moser, Cambrie Dockter, Chloe Dockter, and Sophie Dockter.
The roster may look different next spring, but the standard remains unchanged.
As another remarkable season came to a close, Nielson reflected on the culture that has become the foundation of Hi-Liner tennis.
"I am grateful to be a Hi-Liner coach and to work with these amazing young women throughout the season and in the offseason," Nielson said. "They create an amazing team culture and support each other. They work hard, seek coaching, and have fun together."
And fittingly, he ended his season with the phrase that has become synonymous with Valley City tennis:
"I LOVE being a Hi-Liner!"
