Young Hi-Liner Softball splits on Friday action

The Valley City Hi-Liner softball team continued to show both resilience and growth on Friday, splitting a pair of games against two larger-school opponents as they gear up for postseason softball. Valley City dropped its opener to West Fargo Sheyenne before bouncing back with an impressive win over Minot to move to 10-6 on the season.

For a roster featuring just one senior and several underclassmen in major roles, the Hi-Liners continue to prove they can compete with programs from much larger schools. Even in the loss to Sheyenne, Valley City showed flashes offensively and continued to battle despite defensive miscues and big innings from the Mustangs.

Against Minot, the Hi-Liners answered right away with aggressive baserunning and timely hitting. Valley City grabbed an early lead and never let the Magicians fully settle in, eventually earning a gritty 7-5 victory. The Hi-Liners once again leaned on speed, pressure offense, and clutch situational play to pull out the win.

Eighth grader Noelle Quattry continued her standout season, reaching base multiple times and creating pressure all game long. Bethani Schuldheisz added key hits, while Addy Gerhardt, Ellie Altringer, and Haylee Lueck all delivered important offensive moments throughout the contest. Preslee Nielsen battled in the circle and came through late, shutting the door in the seventh inning to secure the victory.

One of the most encouraging signs for Valley City this spring has been its ability to respond. The Hi-Liners have shown toughness after losses, composure in close games, and an ability to manufacture runs without relying solely on power hitting. For such a young group, that maturity has been one of the biggest reasons the team sits at 10-6 entering the final stretch of the regular season.

Valley City closes out regular season play today against Hillsboro-Central Valley before turning its attention toward postseason softball. If the Hi-Liners continue to clean up defensive mistakes while maintaining the aggressive style that has fueled much of their success, they could become a very dangerous team heading into tournament play. 🥎
