Young Hi-Liners Softball Shows Bright Future Despite Regional Exit

The season came to an end Wednesday afternoon for the Valley City Hi-Liners softball team after an 8-5 loss to Hillsboro-Central Valley in the Region 1 Tournament, but the final result should do little to overshadow what was a highly encouraging season for one of the youngest teams in the region.

Valley City closes the year with an 11-9 overall record, a mark that speaks volumes about how quickly this program continues to develop. With only one senior on the roster and several underclassmen playing major varsity roles all season long, the Hi-Liners showed they are not simply building for the future — they are already becoming a competitive softball program right now.

Wednesday’s game perfectly reflected much of the Hi-Liners’ season. There were moments of outstanding softball, flashes of youth, adversity, and ultimately plenty of fight from a team that refused to back down.

The Hi-Liners came out sharp early behind strong pitching from Delaney Everhart, who struck out hitters consistently throughout the opening innings and kept the Burros off balance. Valley City’s defense also made several key plays early, including strong work on the infield from Bethani Schuldheisz and Josie Heck.

Offensively, the Hi-Liners grabbed momentum in the second inning when seventh grader Noelle Quattry reached base and later scored on an RBI double from Riley Smith to give the Hi-Liners a 1-0 lead. Valley City added another run shortly after to move ahead 2-0 and appeared to be in control midway through the contest.

For a team this young, however, postseason softball can become a learning experience in a hurry.

Hillsboro-Central Valley finally broke through in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a handful of defensive miscues, aggressive baserunning, and timely hitting to score four runs and swing the momentum entirely. The Burros then added four more runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 8-2.

But even with their season hanging in the balance, the Hi-Liners continued to battle.

Valley City put together one final push in the bottom of the seventh inning as Bethani Schuldheisz and Addy Gerhardt reached base before Lauren Larsen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Addie Jewett then delivered one of the biggest swings of the afternoon, driving in three runs with a line-drive single to center field to pull Valley City within 8-5.

The comeback eventually fell short, but the final inning captured exactly why there is so much optimism surrounding this program moving forward. The Hi-Liners never quit competing, even against a seasoned postseason opponent.

And when looking ahead, it is impossible to ignore how bright the future appears.

Seventh grader Noelle Quattry already looks like a foundational piece for the future of Valley City softball, while several other underclassmen gained invaluable varsity and postseason experience this spring. The Hi-Liners improved throughout the season, played meaningful games late into May, and consistently showed toughness and resilience in pressure moments.

Programs do not accidentally win 11 games with a young roster in North Dakota softball. That comes from growth, culture, and players beginning to believe they belong. A coaching staff that poured into these young ladies. Head Coach Autumn Torberson & assistant Coach Jennifer Pecoraro should be commended for the effort to get a young team ready to compete this early.

With nearly the entire roster expected to return next season, the arrows are clearly pointing upward for Valley City softball. This year may have ended in the regional tournament, but it also may have been the beginning of something much bigger for the Hi-Liners over the next few seasons.
