Royals Enter July in Contention for West Region Title
VALLEY CITY, N.D. — A month into the 2026 American Legion baseball season, the Valley City Royals have positioned themselves exactly where they hoped to be.
Following a 7-0 shutout victory over Midway-Minto on Wednesday night, the Royals improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in West Region play, good for first place in the regional standings as the calendar turns to July.
While there is still plenty of baseball left before postseason tournaments begin later this summer, Valley City has established itself as one of the West Region's early contenders by combining timely hitting, dependable pitching and a lineup capable of producing throughout the batting order.
The first month of the season has also shown something equally important: resilience.
A Fast Start
The Royals wasted little time making a statement to begin the summer.
Valley City opened the season with a thrilling 13-10 extra-inning road victory over Jamestown before returning home to defeat Oakes, giving the Royals an early 2-0 record and confidence heading into their home Bridge City Classic tournament.
Although the tournament didn't end the way Valley City hoped—with losses to Jamestown and Grafton—the experience proved valuable against quality competition early in the season.
Rather than allowing those losses to linger, the Royals responded exactly the way good teams do.
Finding Their Rhythm
Just days after the tournament, Valley City traveled to Bismarck and delivered one of its most impressive performances of the summer.
The Royals swept the Bismarck Senators in convincing fashion, winning 12-1 before erupting for a 22-0 victory later that day.
Those games showcased what has become one of Valley City's biggest strengths throughout the first half of the season: the ability to score runs in bunches.
The Royals have consistently put pressure on opposing defenses, receiving contributions throughout the lineup instead of relying on one or two hitters. Their balanced offensive approach has helped produce one of the top team batting averages in the West Region while making them a difficult lineup for opposing pitchers to navigate.
Several players have helped lead that offensive production, with Bryson Heck, Corbyn Powell, Andrew Sykora, Jack Samuelson, Leighton Hendrickson and Parker Roelfsema all playing key roles during the season's opening month. Whether by reaching base, driving in runs or delivering timely hits, the Royals have found different players stepping up on different nights.
That depth has become one of Valley City's greatest assets.
Responding to Adversity
No successful season comes without challenges, and the Royals experienced theirs during the middle portion of June.
Consecutive losses to Garrison and LaMoure, both by a single run or late-game margin, tested a young club still learning how to finish close games on the road.
Instead of allowing those setbacks to define them, Valley City regrouped.
The Royals closed June by winning six of their final eight contests, including a pair of victories over Volunteers 16U, a one-run win over Park River, a shutout victory against the Bismarck Representatives, and a 4-1 win over Casselton to close out the month.
Opening July with another shutout victory over Midway-Minto only reinforced the momentum the Royals have built heading into the second half of the season.
Success Starts on the Mound
While the offense has received much of the attention, Valley City's pitching staff has quietly become one of the team's biggest strengths.
Rather than relying on a single dominant arm, the Royals have received quality outings from multiple pitchers throughout the season.
Bryson Heck, Corbyn Powell, James Schwehr and Brody Mueller have each delivered important innings, giving Valley City the flexibility to compete in doubleheaders and throughout a demanding Legion schedule.
The Royals have consistently kept opposing offenses in check while giving their own lineup opportunities to build leads.
That balance between pitching and offense has allowed Valley City to stay competitive nearly every time it has taken the field.
Room to Keep Improving
As encouraging as the first month has been, the Royals know the season is far from complete.
Defensively, Valley City has shown flashes of excellent baseball while continuing to work through the small mistakes that often separate good teams from championship teams. Coach Carpenter and his coaching staff will undoubtedly use July to sharpen those details before postseason play arrives.
That's part of the natural progression for any Legion team.
The first month is about establishing identity.
The second month is about refining it.
A Challenging July Awaits
The schedule only becomes more demanding from here.
The Royals will hit the road for a pair of games against the Minot Metros before returning home to host Mandan. Later in the month, Valley City travels to face the Oilers 17U and Walleye 18U in two important regional matchups that could have significant implications in the standings.
Each series provides another opportunity for the Royals to strengthen their postseason résumé while continuing to grow together as a team.
With district and state tournaments approaching later this summer, every inning takes on added importance.
Building Toward the Postseason
A 10-6 record doesn't guarantee anything in July.
What it does provide is a strong foundation.
Through the season's opening month, the Royals have demonstrated they can win with offense, lean on quality pitching, bounce back from adversity and compete against strong competition. Those are traits every successful Legion team hopes to develop before the postseason begins.
The next several weeks will determine where Valley City ultimately finishes in the West Region standings, but the first half of the season has already made one thing clear.
The Royals have put themselves in position to play meaningful baseball when it matters most.
And as July begins, that's exactly where they want to be.
