Hi-Liner Softball Splits at UND Tournament, Shows Firepower but Leaves Runs on the Field
The Valley City Hi-Liners went 1–1 at the UND Tournament in Grand Forks on Saturday, showing flashes of an explosive offense while struggling to consistently finish innings defensively.
The day started with a tough 5–4 loss to Nelson County/Midkota in a game that Valley City had opportunities to control early. The Hi-Liners jumped out to a 3–1 lead through two innings and added another run in the sixth, but defensive miscues proved costly. Despite allowing just four hits, Valley City committed five errors, leading to five unearned runs. D. Everhart was strong in the circle, striking out nine over six innings, but the lack of clean defense behind her made the difference. Offensively, the Hi-Liners scattered seven hits, with contributions up and down the lineup, but couldn’t find the timely hit late to pull back ahead.
Valley City responded in a big way in game two, outlasting Turtle Mountain in a 14–12 win in a back-and-forth battle. The Hi-Liners put together one of their most productive offensive performances of the season, racking up 12 hits and 14 runs while applying pressure all game long. R. Smith led the charge with three hits, while N. Quattry scored four runs and drove in three. E. Altringer and D. Aberle each added multi-hit efforts, and the lineup consistently found ways to create traffic and capitalize.
The difference offensively came from depth and aggressiveness. Valley City drew seven walks, stole multiple bases, and kept innings alive by forcing the defense to make plays. Extra-base hits from multiple players helped stretch the field and create scoring opportunities, something the Hi-Liners leaned into as the game wore on.
Defensively, however, inconsistencies remained. Five more errors in game two allowed Turtle Mountain to stay within striking distance despite being out-hit. While the offense covered it up this time, it’s a trend that will need to be cleaned up moving forward.
Overall, it was a split that clearly showed what this team is capable of. When the Hi-Liners are aggressive at the plate and applying pressure, they can score with anyone. But if they want to turn days like this into 2–0 results instead of splits, it comes down to one thing—playing clean, consistent defense behind their pitching.
The Hi-Liner ladies are back in action Monday May 4th at Enderlin.
