Hi-Liners Drop Pair in Saturday Doubleheader at Thompson

Valley City came into Saturday looking to build off a strong 13–3 win earlier in the week—but instead ran into two games where momentum slipped at the wrong times, falling 7–5 to Thompson and 5–3 to Langdon/Munich in a tough road doubleheader.

In the opener against Thompson, the Hi-Liners put together enough offense to stay competitive, finishing with five runs on six hits. James Schwehr led the way at the plate with a 2-hit performance and 2 RBIs, while Leighton Hendrickson and Chase Coghlan each added a run scored. But the difference came in the middle innings, where Thompson capitalized on key opportunities and forced Valley City to chase. Adam Shanenko battled on the mound, going 5.1 innings, but a few extended innings proved costly in a game where the margin stayed tight throughout.

Game two followed a similar script, with Valley City falling 5–3 to Langdon/Munich. The Hi-Liners actually outhit the Cardinals 7–5, but couldn’t convert in key situations. Corbyn Powell drove in two runs, and Luke Praska and Leighton Hendrickson each scored, but a four-run fourth inning from Langdon/Munich flipped the game. On the mound, Chase Coghlan gave Valley City a solid start, allowing just one hit over three innings, while Leighton Hendrickson added a scoreless inning in relief—but one tough stretch in the middle innings ultimately made the difference.

Across both games, the pattern is clear: Valley City is generating enough offense to compete, but situational execution—both at the plate and on the mound—continues to be the separator. You don’t get outscored in two close games like this without a few missed chances stacking up.

The Hi-Liners will look to clean that up quickly as they return home Monday night for Senior Night at Charlie Brown Memorial Field.
